The holiday of Saint Patrick is associated with mythical figures such as the leprechaun and a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Rainbows are formed when drops of rain combine with sunlight causing a prism of colors in the sky. Some people believed that Irish people were lucky and if you caught a leprechaun he would lead you to his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow where you'd receive good fortune. Leprechauns were named after an Irish meaning for shoemaker because shoemakers in the past were characterized as loners who stashed their fortune.
